On February 6, 2008, Brugal & Co. made public that The Edrington Group, a large Scottish distilling company, won control of the company by acquiring a majority shareholding. Expansion and Operations[edit]

Bottling Plant in Puerto Plata
The enterprise spread to other areas, namely livestock, agriculture, ecology, veterinarian and pharmaceutical products, distribution of renowned international liquors and alcoholic beverages, hardware store, production of other alcoholic beverages and patronage of institutions engaged in social work. Brugal has factories in Puerto Plata where the rums are produced. The distribution and marketing offices are located in the capital city of Santo Domingo, and there is also a regional office in Santiago de los Caballeros, the Dominican Republic's second largest city. The company currently supplies the market with several varieties of rum, each with a distinctive taste.
Brugal has international presence in many of the Caribbean islands, the United States,Canada, and Europe, where Spain and Italy are the largest consumers.

fermentation

Before they can be distilled, the juice or molasses should be converted into an alcoholic liquid (wort or "cane wine") via fermentation. Fermentation, made by yeasts converts sugar (sucrose) in carbon and alcohol (ethyl alcohol, in this case) dioxide.

First, a solution containing approximately 15% sugar molasses diluted with water whose quality is really important is prepared. However, it is often fermented cane juice for the "rhum agricole" without adding water provided that the natural sugar content is low.

Although you can use wild yeasts in the air to induce fermentation, most producers use improved yeast to help develop the characteristics of the different rums strains.

At the mill, the cane is washed to remove loose dirt and cut into small pieces to facilitate extraction of juice. The pieces are passed through a series of mills that extract the juice from the stalks. After the first milling, a small amount of water is added to facilitate the following extraction of the juice. The solid residue, called bagasse, is often recycled as fuel.
The cane juice (guarapo, "vesou" in French), green color, is filtered to remove debris cane and then clarified to remove suspended solids. Then it is heated and passed to evaporator to remove excess water.

Any self respecting rum drinker knows that if there is one thing where the Caribbean shines in general, is the making of rum, and Dominican Republic is no different with Brugal.

For the casual traveler to the Dominican Republic, the selection of rums in resorts will perhaps be limited since some of the tastes our rums have may not cater to the regular drinker, the one they will have however, at any place, is BRUGAL.

Brugal Rum - New York Rangers - Logo
Brugal, is the best selling rum in and of the Dominican Republic, I was on a plane the other day and was surprised to see a whole article about this rum in one of the in-flight magazines. While the age of the rums may vary by hotel, in general, the ones you will find will be young rums, and will be best suited for drinking with Coke, or ehem.. Coke Lite (Dominican version of Diet Coke)… See what I did there?
Some of the aged rums from Brugal come wrapped in a yellow mesh (see picture) around the rum, I’ve actually seen people hanging that mesh from their cars as a way to express that they are Dominican, while 99% of people won’t understand it, the 1% who do (as you now will) will giggle internally, and say, “that’s a win”.

synonymous with the word “rum” in the Dominican Republic

It is the most widely available rum there, and from the big three in the Dominican Republic (Brugal, Barcelo and Bermudez) it is also the easiest to find in the United states. In the Dominican Republic, prices range from what in the U.S. would be less than 5 dollars, to their aged rum that although hard to find seems to be quite the treat for rum aficionados everywhere “Siglo Dorado” or “Golden Century” and their newest release “Titanium”.
I don’t want to make this page so much about the history of the company, I will put some facts and everything but all of that can be searched on Wikipedia and I would be just stealing their lines, so let me tell you my take on it. One thing that I do want to note that many don’t realize is that in 2008 Brugal let the world know that by owning the majority of the shares, the company was overtaken by Scottish distilling company the Edrington Group. They agreed to maintain production of the Rum in the Dominican Republic.

Brief Info:
In the second half of the nineteenth century, Don Andres Brugal Montaner, a Spanish citizen who had emigrated to Santiago, Cuba, decided to move to the Dominican Republic and settle permanently in Puerto Plata, a beautiful coastal city in the north of the country. Don Andres had experience with the manufacture of rum in eastern Cuba and with that experience Brugal & Co. was founded in Puerto Plata in 1888, ushering in a long family tradition. Read more

The Brugal Experience

The journey started early in the morning from Santo Domingo. We met at the airport to catch the Brugal plane to Puerto Plata. One hour in the air and we were there – at the birthplace of Brugal rum. It was a great trip filled with history, details and rum.

Brugal has 14 warehouses. 7 in the blending facility of Brugal and 7 located in the areas of the old distillery outside of Puerto Plata. Approximately 250.000 barrels. Every storage area has a capacity of 18.000 barrels. Because of evaporation rate (8 – 12%) the maximum aged rum in Brugal is 8 years. Rums like Brugal Siglo de Oro or Brugal 1888 are double aged which are 12 to 14 years.

Every rum is a blend of rums of different ages. Every bottle of Brugal has a rum that has been aged minimum 1 year as the Dominican rum law states.

Interesting facts:

Production of 5 million boxes of Brugal yearly
8-12% evaporation rate a year
30% of the production goes for export and 70% stays in the country
Brugal has 90% of the market share in the Dominican Republic

First stop of our visit was the visitor center. In front of it you see a wooden wagon used to transfer cut sugarcane juice to the factory. Interesting is that it is still used in some parts because of the difficulty of the terrain.
